In most places of the world, it is encouraged to learn and be fluent in more than one language.  Many children across the world are taught their first language in the home, and then when they go to school, they are given the option at a very young age to learn another language. Immersing your children in another language is a great way to bolster their education and make them well-rounded, cultured individuals.

It’s a fact that knowing multiple languages is a great resume builder and will help make you more employable.  When you’re searching for jobs and employers see that you are fluent in more than one language, you will instantly gain a leg up in what might be a competitive job market. In addition, because your language skills make you more desirable to potential companies, you may have the opportunity to earn more money.  In addition, if your employer knows that you are fluent in another language, you may have more responsibility helping bring international business to the company or by traveling abroad for the company to work and negotiate business deals.

For example, this study shows that speaking more than one language can reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s. Using your brain in this way will keep your brain sharp because it causes it to think in different ways, using different muscles that use different dialects. Pretty awesome, right?

Learning a language, then being able to travel and immerse yourself in the culture is a fantastic way to take a vacation and understand the people more.  Of course, when you travel, it’s not necessary to know the language, but if you do know it, you will likely have an easier time navigating your way around, understanding directions, ordering food, and you might even save considerable money if you are able to barter or negotiate prices when you’re shopping in a different country.  In addition, you will also learn to appreciate and make connections and comparisons with your own culture and the country you’re studying, which could give you greater insight into your personality, where you came from, what makes you unique.

Learning a foreign language can take a lot of time and energy, but it will undoubtedly enrich your personal life as well as your career. So, don’t hesitate when thinking about diving into learning a new language. The time spent in class or with a private tutor will be well worth it and you will inspire others to do the same!
