The biggest problem that you have to encounter while writing an essay for your class assignment or a story for a newspaper is the lack of concentration. It is quite obvious that if you are not able to concentrate on your work, the quality will be very poor. There are certain jobs that you can do even with 50% of your concentration but when it comes to writing, it requires 100% of your attention all the time. I’m going to share some tips in this post that will help you increase your concentration and focus while writing.
1. Wear Headphones
The first thing that you need to do is to shut out all the noises. There should be no voice disturbing you while you are trying to concentrate on your writing assignments. The room where you sit to write may be quite silent but there can still be certain noises that can steal away your concentration. To eliminate all kinds of noises and voices in your surroundings, you can wear headphones. Keep in mind that an ordinary set of headphones will not be sufficient so you will have to buy a specially designed noise reducing headset.
2. Turnoff your email and IM Services
Noise pollution is not the only thing that can divert your attention while writing. The disturbing popups that appear on your computer screen off and on can also divide your concentration. Before you start writing, make sure to turn off your emails and other IM services. There should be no disturbance while you are writing. If possible, use a different computer when writing that is not connected with internet at all. I have seen many journalists using two different computers for work. They use one computer/ laptop to write their story and when they are done with the writing, they transfer that work into another computer with the help of a flash disk so they can publish it online.
3. Close the Door of your Room/office
When you are writing, every person in your house/ office must know that you should not be disturbed. You can simply tell them not to indulge you into any discussion unless you get out of your room or you can simply shut the door of your room/ office so you can write peacefully. Leaving the door open will give others and opportunity to see you and come up to you with a new topic of discussion. The best way to avoid such situation is by closing the door of your room and putting a “Don’t Disturb” sign on its handle.
4. Work on a Desk (not on Couch/ Bed)
The latest advancement in technology has made it very easy for us to work at our convenience. If you have to write an article and you are sitting on a couch, you don’t need to get up at all because you can start working from the same place where you are sitting. However, I would suggest you to make a habit of working form your desk and not on a couch or bed. You can try working on a desk and on a couch and see for yourself which situation works better for you.
5. Work in Short Intervals of Time
If you have a lot of work to complete then it is better to divide that work into smaller parts. You should write for 30-40 minutes consecutively and then take a break for 10-20 minutes. This will help you give your best shot in writing and take a rest to freshen up your mind as well. You will not feel exhausted at all by working in short intervals of time.
